# Troubleshooting Signage Playlist

> Fix common Signage Playlist issues: the QR code screen, triggers that don't fire, unexpected content, image timing, and silent videos.

## The device shows a QR code and "Scan the QR code"

The app shows this screen when the settings for the device have no default items.

1. Go to **Apps** → **Installations**, open your installation, and go to the **Settings** tab
2. If this is the first setup, click **Edit settings** in **Global settings**
3. Check that **Default Items** has at least one item with an asset picked in **Pick an asset**
4. If the device or its space has a [settings override](https://learn.phystack.com/additional-explanations/what-are-global-settings-and-settings-overrides/), check that the override also has default items. The override replaces the global settings for that device
5. Click **Save all changes**. If **Auto Deploy** is off, deploy the new [build](https://learn.phygrid.com/glossary/#build) to the device's [environment](https://learn.phygrid.com/glossary/#environment)

## Scheduled content doesn't play at the expected time

**Datetime**, **Date**, **Time**, and **Day** triggers use the device's own clock and timezone.

1. Check the device timezone in **Operations** → **Devices**. The device uses its space's timezone unless **Override space timezone** is on. See [Configure a device](https://learn.phystack.com/devices/configure-a-device/)
2. Check that the start of the trigger is earlier than the end. A trigger whose start is later than its end never plays
3. For a **Time** trigger that runs past midnight, such as 22:00 to 02:00, set up two triggers instead: one from 22:00 to 23:59 and one from 00:00 to 02:00
4. Check the **End date** of a **Date** trigger. Content plays until the end of that day
5. Check the **Day** trigger against the day in the device's timezone, not yours
6. Check whether the device has a settings override. Triggers set in the global settings don't apply to a device or space with its own override

## Weather or temperature content doesn't play

The app looks up the current weather for **City** online. If the lookup fails, the trigger stays inactive and the default items play instead.

1. Check that the device has a working internet connection
2. Check the spelling of **City**. Use the English city name. If the name is ambiguous, add the country code, for example `Paris,FR`
3. Check the direction of a temperature trigger. **Temperature minimum** plays when the temperature is above the value. **Temperature maximum** plays when it is below the value. Both use degrees Celsius
4. Check the **Condition** list for a **Weather** trigger. The trigger plays only when the current main condition is one of the selected ones
5. Allow up to 15 minutes for a change in weather to show

See [Use triggers to schedule content](https://learn.phygrid.com/signage-playlist/use-triggers-to-schedule-content/) for how each trigger works.

## The wrong mix of content plays

While any trigger is active, its items replace the default items. Default items play only when no trigger is active.

1. Check which triggers are active right now. Every active trigger adds its items to the playlist, in the order the triggers are listed
2. To play only one trigger at a time, turn on **Show only first active trigger**
3. With **Show only first active trigger** on, reorder the triggers so the most important one is at the top. The first active trigger in the list wins
4. To keep default content playing during a trigger, add the same items to that trigger's items too

## Images change too fast or stay on screen too long

The image **Duration (ms)** is in milliseconds, not seconds.

1. Check the duration of each image item. For example, enter `10000` to show an image for 10 seconds
2. Check that **Duration (ms)** is filled in. It's required for images and GridApps
3. Don't set a duration for videos. They always play to the end

## Videos play without sound

Signage Playlist always plays videos muted.

1. Check that the video doesn't depend on audio. Add captions or on-screen text for any message that matters

## A media file can't be picked

Signage Playlist accepts MP4 and WebM videos, and PNG, JPEG and GIF images.

1. Check that the file is in one of these formats
2. For a video, pick one of its converted versions (presets), such as H264 1080p. You can't use the original upload
3. Allow time for conversion after you upload a video
