# Self-Checkout overview

> Learn what PhyGrid RFID Self-Checkout does: instant recognition of tagged items, barcode scanning, and payment on a card terminal or online by QR code.

## What is RFID Self-Checkout?

PhyGrid RFID Self-Checkout is a kiosk app where customers check out on their own, without waiting in line. They place their RFID-tagged items near the RFID reader, and the kiosk recognises them and adds them to the bag. Items without a tag can be scanned with a barcode scanner. Customers review their bag on the screen and pay on the payment terminal at the kiosk, or online by scanning a QR code with their phone.

## What Self-Checkout does

- **Instant RFID recognition:** Tagged items placed near the RFID reader are recognised and added to the bag, several at a time, without scanning each one
- **Barcode scanning:** Customers scan an item's barcode to add items that don't have an RFID tag
- **Starts with the first item:** Placing or scanning the first item on the idle screen opens the bag, so customers don't have to tap the screen first
- **Bag and totals:** The screen lists the items with their prices and the total. Customers can remove items before paying
- **Payment on a terminal or online:** The payment screen shows the total, asks customers to follow the instructions on the payment terminal, and offers a QR code to pay online on their phone
- **Your brand:** Set your own idle screen media, fonts, colours and light or dark theme, so the kiosk fits your store
- **Idle screen:** The kiosk returns to its idle screen and empties the bag after a period without use
- **Analytics:** See product barcode and RFID scans, items added to and removed from the bag, and sessions (see [Analytics](https://learn.phygrid.com/analytics/))
- **Remote management:** Configure the kiosk from the PhyGrid Console

## Why use RFID Self-Checkout

- **Shorter queues:** Customers check out on their own terms, without waiting in line
- **Fast and accurate checkout:** RFID reads the tagged items in one go, for quick and accurate transactions
- **More time for customers:** Staff are free to focus on customer service instead of the till

> **Note:** These guides describe Self-Checkout version 1.0.4. In this version, the payment screen asks customers to pay on the payment terminal next to the kiosk and offers a QR code to pay online; the terminal itself is set up outside the app. Self-Checkout doesn't print receipts.
